The story goes that the Holly king, who represents the winter season, and the Oak king, who represented the summer season, are at a constant battle of supremacy over one another. During the midsummer months, the Oak king has the most power and rules over the land until the Autumn equinox, then during the winter as the Oak king loses its leaves, the Holly King regains his strength, peaking during the winter solstice, and taking his turn to rule.
