About Me
My name is Louis Szabo, and I began my journey as a self-taught realism landscape artist at the age of fifteen. Over time, however, my practice has evolved beyond landscape painting into something I see as an ongoing act of documentation. Through my work, I seek to record places that shape our relationship with the natural world, capturing landscapes as they exist today, before time, climate, and human influence inevitably reshape them. By romanticising nature's immense biodiversity, I hope to cultivate a deeper sense of appreciation, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and recognise these places as worthy of admiration, remembrance, and conservation.
My paintings combine realism with expressive painterly qualities, using rich colour, juxtaposed textures, and atmospheric depth to portray the landscape with both precision and emotion. Beauty, for me, is not an escape from reality but a means of strengthening our emotional connection to it. I believe that people protect what they first learn to value, and my work is driven by the conviction that conservation begins with connection.
Much of my inspiration comes from Slovakia's majestic wilderness, particularly the Tatry Mountains, where sweeping vistas, diverse wildlife, and vibrant vegetation continue to inspire my work. While the Tatry remain a recurring subject, my practice extends far beyond them, documenting remarkable landscapes around the world and often revealing beauty in places that might otherwise be overlooked. Alongside expansive panoramas, I frequently turn my attention to intimate scenes of flora and fauna, recording the intricate details that together form the richness of the natural world. Whether depicting a vast mountain range or a single wildflower, each painting serves as both a celebration of nature's beauty and a record of a world in constant change.
To ensure these records endure for generations, every painting is created on archival-quality linen that I hand stretch myself using traditional canvas-making techniques. This meticulous process reflects my commitment to longevity, preserving not only the artwork itself but also the landscapes and stories it represents. It is a practice that connects my work to centuries of artistic craftsmanship while ensuring each painting is made to last.
I believe art is more than decoration; it is a visual record of what we choose to value. Every painting carries with it the artist's perspective, beliefs, and sense of responsibility, becoming a message that can be passed from one generation to the next. My work is created for those who see the natural world as both a profound gift and a fragile inheritance. Through documenting these places with care and reverence, I hope to inspire not only admiration for their beauty, but also a lasting commitment to their protection.
Although my journey so far has been short, only being 21 years old as you’re reading this, it has been an incredibly insightful and fulfilling one. With the help of my supporting family and friends, I have participated in multiple public gallery exhibitions across the UK, featured in worldwide publications, sold paintings to private collectors internationally and worked on commissioned projects. I look forwards to where this adventure of mine takes me next.
