In the foreground, a bittern stands rigid among the reeds, adopting a pose of solemn concentration that suggests it is quite convinced of its own invisibility. Its earnest attempt of concealment introduces its will and determination in the art of staying hidden. Beyond this moment, the painting unfolds into a tranquil autumn scene, where still water reflects the rich colours of the surrounding trees and the clear blue sky above. The harmony of light, reflection, and seasonal colour lends the work a calm, contemplative mood.
