Located in southern Germany, Neuschwanstein stands like a fairy tale castle at the top of the foothills of the Bavarian alps. Its white limestone structure towers against the jagged mountain rock besides it. Originally built for King Ludwig II, it is said used this fortress as his private refuge instead of a political stronghold. His residency only lasted a short time as he was later declared insane and unfit to rule.
