Arches Over Dee Valley

Original oil painting, 40cm x 40cm on linen.
2025
£500

Featuring the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct crossing the Dee valley in Wales, this painting captures a rare harmony between human architecture and nature, a combination I often avoid as I prefer to paint landscapes untouched by humans. However, there are always exceptions like this as the long span of stone arches and verdant woodland creates a serene, vibrant composition. Soft, diffused light settles over the distant slopes, lending the scene a transient and pastoral character.

Constructed in 1805, Pontcysyllte remains the tallest navigable aqueduct in Britain, towering at 38 meters and stretching across 307 meters, supported by 18 graceful stone arches.
